State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said all people of the country would get 100 percent electricity by December this year, as 94 pc people now are under power coverage.
“Within the next December Payra coal fired power plant will generate electricity,” he told this on Wednesday while addressing a contract signing ceremony as the chief guest at Bidyut Bhaban.
Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) signed the power purchase agreement (PPA) with Unique Meghnaghat Power Limited to buy 584 megawatts (MW) electricity.
Secretary of BPDB Saiful Islam Azad and Managing Director of Unique Meghnaghat Power Limited Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat signed the contract on behalf of their respective sides.
Chaired by BPDB Chairman Engineer Khaled Mahmood, the function was also addressed, among others, by Principal Coordinator of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad, Power Secretary Dr Ahmed Kaikaus and US Ambassador in Dhaka Earl R. Miller as special guests.
According to the deal, Unique Meghnaghat Power Limited will commission the power plant to supply electricity in next 36 months. The sponsor company will implement the project and supply electricity to the national grid for 22 years.
The state minister said access to quality and reliable electricity is no more a dream for Bangladesh, as the government has been working to develop distribution and transmission line across the country.
Pointing out the Eid-ul-Azha, Nasrul said, “We will be able to supply electricity smoothly across the country during the Eid.”
Power Secretary Dr Ahmed Kaikaus urged all not to believe in rumours, because a rumour was spreading on social media recently that power would be cut off, adding, “Electricity supply will continued smoothly across the country.”
During the flash flood, supply of electricity is being disrupted as some substations have gone down under water. Besides, the power situation is normal throughout the country, he said.
