A meeting to grow consciousness about reducing river and marine accidents among the boatmen on Meghna and Dakatia Rivers was held on Monday .
Over one hundred boatmen were present at this meeting was held beside the Meghna River at the Molehead in Chandpur town. Additional District Magistrate Abdullah Al Mahmud Jaman spoke on the occasion. UNO Sadar Kanij Fatema among others also spoke. Executive Magistrates Samiul Islam and Uzzal Hossain, River Thana OC Abu Taher, Chandpur Municipality’s Marketing officer Jakir Hossain and pressmen were present.
Addressing the boatmen, the speakers called upon them to carefully drive their boats and trawlers in the rivers as this is the peak time of rainy season and the Meghna river is turbulent and high tides and waves are flowing and life and journey are so risky on the rivers. On last Sunday evening, two youths died after drowning when their trawler capsized in the river near Chandpur town. To minimise river/marine accidents and to grow consciousness among the boatmen about it, on behalf of the District administration, the Additional District Magistrate Abdullah Al Mahmud Jaman distributed 100 pieces of life jackets among the genuine boatmen so that at the time of river/marine accidents, they all could save their lives supporting on the lifejackets.
