Cox’ Bazar Correspondent :
More than 100 fishermen abducted from the Bay of Bengal near the Sundarbans four days back, are not yet rescued. The abductors are demanding a huge amount of ransom to the victims’ family members through mobile phone.
Some fishermen and boat owners, who returned to shore by escaping from the clutches of the abductors, said that the pirates led by Master and Halim bahinis of Rampal upazila under Bagerhat district swooped down on about 30 fishing boats including 12 of Kutubdia in Cox’s Bazar district near the west coast of the Sundarbans early Tuesday and abducted those fishermen including 18 of Kutubdia.
The abductors later demanded Tk 10/12 lakh against per abducted person and ordered for payment through bKash, a mobile money transfer platform in Bangladesh. These abductors have relation with other abductors of Kutubdia and other coastal areas, it was alleged.
Meanwhile, the law-enforcing agencies are not assisting the boat owners here, the owners alleged. The abductors are demanding the ransom from unidentified places and threatened of dire consequences if any boat is involved in fishing in the Bay. As a result, many fishermen are not going to the sea during the peak hour of fishing on fear of the atrocities threatened by the alleged abductors.
The abducted fishermen and boatmen are: Afzol and Mahbubul Haque under two boats of Hazi Saber Company, and Ziaul Haque and Gias Uddin under one boat of Abdur Rashid Boilya Company of Boroghop area; Azla Das and Ananda Das under two boats of Satya Bahadder; Kala Sona under one boat of Didar Company; Adinath Das alias Gura Buijja under one boat of Bibisen Company; Kalu, Yunus and Monsur under one boat of Ismail Company; Nur Hussain, Sujan, Saju, Subhas, and Osman under two boats of Ratnasen Company, and Nasir and Ledu under one boat of Sheikh Kamal at Ali Akbar Dail Kumirar Chhara area; and Rahim and Mintu Jaldash under one boat of Alamgir Company.
However, the pirates chased one boat of Farid Company but could not seize it, said boatman Abul Kalam.
Leaders of Fishing Boat Owners’ Association Hazi Saber Ahmad Company and Joynal Abedin Company said they are feeling unsecured after investing crores of taka in fishing business.
