A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced a man to 10 years’ imprisonment with fine of Tk 50,000 for killing his brother-in-law in 2012.
Judge ABM Sajedur Rahman of Dhaka’s Speedy
Trial Tribunal-3 also says in his verdict that if the convict fails to pay the fine he will suffer two more years in prison.
The convict, Hafizur Rahman Khan, 45, was tried in his absence.
The prosecution story says, Hafizur Rahman’s wife Khaleda Parveen Baby locked into a scuffle with her husband in connection with his alleged extramarital relationship.
On May 29, 2012, Baby’s brother Mozammel Hossain Milon went to her house at Shantibagh in the capital to settle the problem when an altercation ensued between Milon and Hafizur Rahman and at a stage Hafiz shot dead Milon from his licensed short gun. Milon died on the spot.
Hafizur Rahman went into hiding immediately after the incident. But, Meherunnesa Koly, wife of slain Milon, filed a murder case with Shahjananpur Police Station the same night.
Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Shahjahanpur Police Station and also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Tofail Ahmed submitted the charge sheet against Hafizur Rahman on July 21, 2012.
Later on August 12 last year, Dhaka’s Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Jahurul Haque framed charges against the lone accused of the case. As two judges of the case felt embarrassed to conduct the trial of the case, the sensational case was transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal of Dhaka for quick disposal.
After examining the records and 17 witnesses, the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Judge pronounced the verdict. However, immediately after the verdict, neither the complainant nor the defence was found happy with the verdict.
