A 10-year-old domestic help was reportedly set herself on fire in the capital’s Ramna area as she was unable to endure her employers’ abuse any longer.
Joba Akhter was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with 95 per cent burned on Friday morning, soon after she reportedly set herself on fire.
Parth Shankar Paul, resident surgeon of the DMCH Burn Unit, told reporters
that Joba Akhter is in critical condition because her respiratory organs have been severely damaged.
DMCH police outpost in-charge Inspector Mozammel Haque said, “Her employer Mehedi Hasan Kallol brought the girl to the hospital around 9:30am claiming that she set herself on fire. But he failed to give a reason for the incident.
“Kallol has been taken under police surveillance and proper legal action will be taken against the couple after investigation.” Speaking to journalists later, Joba, groaning in pain, said she could no longer endure the enormous work pressure and repeated physical torture by Kollol and his wife Poly. “I could not bear the inhuman torture anymore, so I decided to take my life,” she said.
