Bagerhat Correspondent :
Atleast 10 villages along with crop lands and fish farms of low -lying areas under Fakirhat Upazila in Bagerhat district were inundated with water due to incessant and torrential rains accompanied with the sudden rise of water level in the river Chitra.
As a result, much damage was done to crop lands, huge quantity of shrimps, lobsters and fish of other spices were swept away and several hundred people were marooned in water.
It is reported that the river Chitra passes through Mulghar Union of the Upazila. Kalkalia, Patia, Gurguria, Goabaria etc, villages of the Union (under Fakirhat Upazila), Dumuria, Khilgati, Roygram, Karatdia villages under Chitalmari Upazila and Ujalpur village under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila are situated on the both sides of the river Chitra.
There are embankments of Water Development Board on the both sides of the river. But due to heavy downpour and onrush of the river water 60% of the villages were submerged. On the other hand, the embankments were broken at some points and big cracks appeared on other points of the same due to heavy pressure of water on them (embankments). Many villages within the embankments, crop lands, fish farms and even dwelling houses and cow sheds were inundated. Consequently, human beings and domestic animals are living together. Scarcity of fodder has been prevailing in those villages. As a result, domestic animals are also suffering a lot. Both the district and Upazila administrations visited the affected areas, but nothing was done to minimize the sufferings of the people.
On the other hand, many places of Ghanashyampur, Kachua, Bara Shuvodia, Choto Shuvodia, Churashi and Tekathi villages of Shuvodia Union, Piljanga, Shyambagat, Town Noapara and Baliadanga of Piljanga Union, Attaki, Pagla and Satshya of Fakirhat Sadar Union, Naldha, Maubhog and Dohazari of Naldha-Maubhog Union and Bhabna, Zaria and Bhattakhamar under Lokpur Union were inundated with water. Badly affected areas are Putia, Gurgaria and Goabaria of Mulghar Union, Attaki of Sadar Union, Kachua, Ghanashyampur, Churashi and Bashbari of Shuvodia Union. If the stagnant water is not receded immediately the sufferings of the villagers will know no bunds.
