Some 10 villages of Chitalmari Upazila in Bagerhat district were inundated when the embankment constructed by the Water Development Board on the bank of the river Chitra was broken due to sudden increase of water-level of the river accompanied with weeks-long incessant and heavy downpour.
The affected villages are Dumuria, Arulia, Khilgati, Karatdia, Roygram, Gurguria, Pardumuria, Kharia . within Sadar Union under the Upazila. While the newsmen were visiting the area the affected people disclosed to them, on Thursday mid night
when we were sleeping the embankment was suddenly collapsed at more than one points and within a short time the villages were inundated with the onrush of the water . Even the water entered in many dwelling houses, kitchens and cow sheds. So, we were marooned in water. Not only that but also hundred of fish farms were submerged and shrimps, lobsters and other spices of fish worth Taka more than one crore were swept away. Many people cannot prepare their food and they are now passing their days in miserable conditions. They opined, if the damaged embankment is not repaired immediately more areas will be submerged with water and their sufferings will know no bounds. So, they demanded for the immediate repair of the embankment and sanction of relief materials.
Suman Mondol, a cultivator of shrimps and lobsters of village Roygram told the newsmen that his fish farm on a plot of one Bigha lands and its adjacent many other shrimp and lobster farms belonging to others had been submerged with water and fish (lobster and shrimps) worth Tk. several lakh had been washed away.
On the other hand, Shekhar Bhakta, a owner of a fish farm of village Sreerampur disclosed to the newsmen that he had cultivated lobsters, shrimps and spices of fish on a plot of 8 Bigha lands had been completely inundated with water and shrimps, lobsters worth Taka several lakh were swept by the onrush of water. He further disclosed that shrimps, lobsters and other spices fish some other fish farms of his village and its adjacent villages had been washed away.
Bidyut Baray and Debashis Baray of village Dumuria told that as their village had been inundated with water they have been suffering untold inconveniences.
Md. Didarul Alam, Nirbahi Officer of Chitalmari Upazila disclosed to the newsmen, continuous and torrential rains and water of flow tide overflowed the embank on the bank of the river Chitra and consequently, a number of villages within Sadar Union under the Upazila were inundated with water. He added, the repairing work of the damaged embankment is going on and it is expected that the situation will be improved within a short time.
Shaikh Niazam Uddin, Chairman , Chitalmari Sadar Union told the newsmen, 8/10 villages of his Union situated on the bank of the river Chitra were inundated with incessant and heavy downpour accompanied with onrush of the river water. As a result, the affected villagers are suffering inconveniences and fish cultivators incurred a heavy loss.
