A Chittagong court sentenced 10 people to death and five others to life imprisonment in a case for killing a chairman of Sonakania Union Parishad (UP) under Satkania Upazila in Chittagong.
Judge AKM Mozammel Haque of Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict on Sunday.
The death sentence awardees are incumbent Chairman of Satkania Sadar Union Nizam Uddin, Md Manik, Md Jahed, Md Rashed, Md Tareque, Zillur Rahman, Md Rafique, Faruk Ahmed, Jasim Uddin, and Bashir Ahmed.
The life term sentence awardees are Morshed Alam, Md Ayyub, Md Idris, Md Harun, and Md Idris Alam.
The acquitted are Abu Taher, Abdul Malek, Khayer Ahmed, and Mostaque Ahmed.
Public Prosecutor of Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Md Ayyub Khan said that the court sentenced 10 people to death and fined them Tk 50,000 each, five people to life imprisonment and fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, they will have to serve another year.
“Besides, the court acquitted four accused,” the PP said, adding that the total number of the accused was 20 and one of them died.
The court pronounced the verdict after 21 witnesses testified in the case.
According to case documents, local Awami League leader and chairman of Sonakania UP Amjad Hossain was shot to death on October 4, 1999.
Later, the deceased’s wife Syeda Rowshan Akhter filed a murder case against 20 people.
After investigating the case, the police submitted a charge-sheet against 20 people to the court on December 22, 2000.
Expressing satisfaction over the verdict, the deceased’s wife hoped that the verdict would be upheld in the High Court.
