ICT accepts apology: 10 more persons exempted of contempt charge

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT) on Monday accepted the apology of 10 eminent personalities and exonerated them of the contempt charge for their statement on the tribunal’s order against British journalist David Bergman.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan, exempted them of the charge as they begged unconditional pardon for their statement on the tribunal’s order.
The 10 persons are: Ali
Riaz, professor of the Government and Politics of the Illinois State University of the USA, Professor Parvin Hasan, Professor Ferdous Azim, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Christina Pereira, Mohammad Noor Khan, Samia Haque, Seuti Sabur, Sarah Shihabuddin and Tahmima Anam.
Earlier, the tribunal also exempted other 15 persons of the charge on February 23 following their unconditional apology for their statements regarding the Bergman’s punishment.
The tribunal set March 18 to pass its order about the remaining 24 persons.
A total of 50 persons gave a statement on December 20 last year, expressing their concern over the tribunal’s order on Bergman. Later, Khushi Kabir withdrew her name from the statement. The Tribunal issued contempt notice against the 49 persons on January 14, seeking explanation from them for their statement.
The Tribunal-2 fined Bergman Taka 5,000, in default seven days imprisonment, on December 2 for his write-up in his personal blog, making comments on sub judice matters in the Tribunal.
Bergman, a British national, is the son-in-law of the eminent jurist of the country Dr Kamal Hossain. He is working for local English newspaper ‘The New Age’.
