Staff Reporter :At least ten people were killed in Cox’s Bazar and Noakhali districts on Saturday in flashfloods, landslides and trawler capsize triggered by torrential rains.The country has been experiencing heavy downpour since Wednesday night due to a low, intensifying the monsoon and causing untold sufferings to the people. In the capital, normal life was disrupted due to massive water-logging caused by heavy rain on Friday and Saturday. In Cox’s Bazar, a mother and her daughter were killed in landslides while locals recovered bodies of four persons who were washed away by floodwaters on Thursday.The ill-fated mother and daughter were identified as Masuda Khatun, 45, and her daughter Shahana Akter, 13, of Pararchhari union in Teknaf upazila.The bodies of four people found in Ramu and Chokoria upazilas were identified as Kamrun Nahar, 20, and Tarika Hasnat, 4, of Garjania village in Ramu upazila; and Shafiul Alam, 30, of Dulahazara village, and Kaital Bin Rahim, 14, of kithara village in Chokoria upazila.According to the Chokoria police, they had remained missing while going to take shelter to a nearby cyclone centre on Thursday. “When they were on the way to cyclone centre, the strong current of floodwaters washed them away. And at last they met the tragic end of their lives in the floodwaters. It is suspected that another missing named Anowar Hossain of Laukkarchar village in Ramu upazila might have died,” said the police official said. In Noakhali, three fishermen drowned when their fishing trawler sank in the Meghna Riverr in Hatiya upazila due to storm and heavy rainfall. Later, locals recovered the three bodies from the river on Saturday morning.The deceased were identified as Jamal, 35, son of Anajol and Rakib, 15, both residents of Shunyerchar, and Abdul Matin, son of Abdul Malek, a resident of Rehania village of the upazila.Officer-in-Charge of Hatiya Police Station Nurul Huda said the trawler carrying 13 fishermen sank in the river during storm when they went to the river for fishing in the dead of night. Many parts of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarbans are now inundated due to the flash flood and incessant rains in the districts. The flood situation is continuing to deteriorate further in the districts. Road communications of the districts with the other parts of country were cut off due to the flooding. In capital Dhaka, traffic almost came to a halt with hundreds of vehicles stranded in the submerged roads and low laying areas going under water causing sufferings to the citizens.Incessant rains triggered by monsoon inundated many parts of the capital for the second consecutive day on Saturday, throwing the normal life in complete disarray.Main streets in areas like Mirpur-10, Kalshi road near Journalist Housing Society at Mirpur, Shenpara-Parabata and Kazipara, Rokeya Sarani, Bijoysharani, Maghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Kakrail, Sabujbagh, Khilgaon, Merul Badda, Rampura, Motijheel, Shyampur and Demra went under water. A good number of vehicles remained stranded in knee-to-waist deep water in many places.Many home and office-goers had to get stuck due to the downpour. Besides, roads, lanes and by-lanes experienced serious water-logging as the city’s drainage system failed to drain out the rainwater.A number of vehicles, especially CNG-run auto-rickshaws, went on out of order due to water-logging on the streets. Though most of the VIP roads are free from water-logging, vehicles could not move to lanes and by lanes due to water-logging.Roads and lanes of the capital went under water, slowing vehicular movement and causing huge traffic jams. Road digging at several places at Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover construction site tormented the travelers most.Apart from these, commuters are also facing unbearable misery while travelling through roads connecting Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Eskaton, Dilu Road, Siddeswari, Shatrasta and Rampura due to the flyover construction work as the roads riddled with huge path holes have turned muddy and risky.According to Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), water levels in 42 river stations monitored have marked rises and 36 stations recorded falls.Among the 84 monitored water level stations, two river stations have been registered steady while three river stations flowing above danger level, a bulletin issued by FFWC said.The Kansha river at Jariajanjail, the Shangu at Dohazari and the Matamuhuri at Chiringa are flowing above its danger levels by 18 cm, 65 cm, and 103 cm respectively.A total of 236 mm rainfall were recorded at Cox’s Bazar, 71 mm at Lama, 215 mm at Teknaf , 70 mm at Rangamati, 81 mm at Chittagong, 82 mm at Chandpur, 57.1 mm at Pabna, 52.9 mm at Kushtia, 67 mm at Barguna, 102 mm at Barisal, 128 mm at Panchpukuria, 62 mm at Faridpur, 65 mm at Dhaka, 62.2 at Bogra, 55 at Ramgarh and 48.3 mm at Jessore.Met office forecasts that light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions with heavy to very heavy falls at places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Rajshahi divisions.
