10 missing in Buriganga trawler capsize

A Kamrangirchar-bound trawler capsized with about 80 passengers on board after a cargo vessel struck it in the Buriganga River near Hasnabad, on the outskirt of the capital, on Monday night.
Fire Service Headquarters Operator Ziaur Rahman said that no causality had been reported till Tuesday evening.
More than 10 passengers had gone missing, locals said.
But Hasnabad River Police Outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Shahidul Islam could not confirm the number of missing passengers, however, some passengers had swam ashore. “The trawler was going to Kamrangirchar from Swarighat of the city. It met the accident when its rotors became entangled with some marine plants and just then a cargo vessel struck it from behind and caused the trawler to capsize, the SI said.
“It was carrying about 80 passengers at the time of accident,” he said. “The trawler was recovered around 10:30am on Tuesday. We are still not sure about the number of missing passengers. The rescue operation will continue till further instruction,” he said. Fire Service Sadarghat Terminal Deputy Director Joynal Abedin said, firefighters, river police and coastguards have been searching for the missing passengers.
