10 eminent citizens known as govt supporters criticize extrajudicial killings

Ten eminent citizens of the country, most of whom are known as government supporters yesterday criticized extrajudicial killings expressing their grave concern over the ongoing ‘killings of people’ in the name of anti-drug drives. They said such killings are not acceptable in any way in a democratic state, says a press release.

“We are noticing that many people are falling victims of extra-judicial killing every day. Such type of killing is not acceptable in a democratic state,” they said in a joint statement this evening.

The country’s constitution has guaranteed the people’s right to live that cannot be snatched following such manner, they said expressing concern over the death of Teknaf municipality councillor Akramul Haque.

Referring to the incident of Akramul’s death, they said that some sensational reports over killing of people have been published in the mass and social media.

“But, it could not be known about the allegation brought against Teknaf municipality councillor Akramul Haque prior to his killing,” the signatories said.

“It’s unimaginable in a democratic state and society. Such type of incident is enough to make the entire anti-drug drive questionable,” they said.

They also urged the government to ensure judicial investigation into the incident of the extra-judicial killings as soon as possible.

The signatories are: Prof Emeritus Anisuzzaman, Prof Hasan Azizul Haque, Ramendru Majumder, Ataur Rahman, Mamunur Rashid, Nirmolendu Gun, Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, Mofidul Hoque, Golam Quddus and Hasan Arif.
