Ten meritorious students of Pali and Buddhist Studies Department of Dhaka University (DU) were awarded the “Buddhist Theorists Dr Sukomol Barua Gold Medal” and scholarships for their academic excellence.
DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman handed over the scholarships and certificates to the awardees on Thursday at RC Majumder Arts auditorium on the campus.
Sharmin Nahar and Prokal Chakma got the “Buddhist Theorists Dr Sukomol Barua Gold Medal” for 2015 and 2016. They will receive the gold medals at the 51st convocation of DU on 6th October.
‘Sukomol Barua Scholarship-2016’ recipients are- Lipi Akhtar, Swapna Rani Mandal, KM Aftabul Islam Tanmay, Arpana Roy, Mst Snigdha and Prakat Chakma while the ‘Sukomol Barua Scholarship-2017’ recipients are- Mst Ashamoni Akhter, Mujahid Hossain, Tarun Biswas and Suraiya Sharmin.
Congratulating the students, Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman said, “Professor Dr Sukomol Barua possessed unique values in his struggling life. Establishment of this trust to give inspiration to the students, he virtually manifested a non-communal trait.”
He also congratulated the parents of the awardees for their contributions to their children’s success.
DU Treasurer Prof Dr. Dr. Kamal Uddin presided over the program while Arts Faculty Dean Prof. Md. Delwar Hossain and Dhaka International Buddhist Monastery’s Principal Srimat Dharmamitra Mahasthabir addressed as guests of honor.
Donor of the trust fund Prof. Dr. Sukomol Barua’s daughter Sanghamitra Barua Manoshi gave vote of thanks while Pali and Buddhist Studies Department Professor Dr. Biman Chadra Barua gave welcome speech.
