Fire in Opsonin Pharma factory in Barisal: 10 hurt in Gournadi

At least one worker was killed and 14 others were injured in two separate fire incidents in Barisal sadar and Gournadi upazilas on Monday.
In Barisal sadar upazila, one person was killed and four were injured when fire caught the factory of Opsonin Pharmaceuticals in the city’s Bogra Road area early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Nesaruddin Peyada, 48, a worker for colour painting, son of Abul Peyada, from Chiknikandi under Galachipa upazila in Patuakhali district. He died at the hospital.
The four injured persons are Zakir Hossain, Faruk Howladar, 31, Sidam Nandi, 40, Faruk Howladar, 44 and Abdur Rashid, 38, had been admitted into the surgery unit of the hospital, said Dr. Habibur Rahman , Emergency Medical Officer of SBMCH.
Jalaluddin, Security Guard of the factory, said the moment he saw the flame and smoke emitting from the packaging and godown section of the factory, he informed it to the Fire Service at about 2:15am.
Sub-Inspector A R Mukul of Barisal Kotwali police station said that he rushed to the spot after getting information from the local people and saw fire spreading out from the ground floor to 3rd floor of the factory.
Shawkat Hasan, Assistant Director, Fire Service and Civil Defence in Barisal said that seven units of fire service from Barisal, Jhalakathi and Banaripara stations rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control at 5:30 AM.
The cause of fire and amount of losses could not be ascertained till writing of this report on Monday afternoon, the Fire Service official said.
In another incident, at least 10 people were injured in a devastating fire that burnt six business enterprises and four residential houses at Raipatty of Torki Bandar under Gournadi upazila in Barisal district the same day, said Abdul Karim, Station Officer of Gournadi Fire Service Station. Besides, three shops and three houses were damaged severely.
The injured includes Shamim Khan, Helal Mistri, Taifur Bepari, Swapan Kumar, Harun Boyati, Zamil Mahmud, Nazrul Islam and Chunnu Bepari, among others, local sources said.
Three units of fire service from Gournadi, Wazirpur and Madaripur stations rushed to the spot and extinguished the flame in three hours at about 6:30 am yesterday.
Electric short circuit from the shop of Rashid Maker might be the cause of the fire, Fire Service sources said.
Fire Service and affected people sources said, godowns of Nikhil and Brothers, Bismillah Store, Lucky Variety Stores, Merico Bangladesh, GSK Distributor, electronic shop of Abdur Rashid Maker, residential houses of Ripon Baroi, Zakir Rari, Asim Rari, Roby Sarkar were gutted fully.
Besides cotton godown of Foyez, office of Kazi Al Amin and restaurant of Tapos, houses of Nannu Bhuiyan, Farhad Gharami and Anil Rari had been damaged severely. The affected people claimed that total losses would be more than Tk five crore.
Abul Hasnat Abdullah, local MP and district AL president, high officials of administration and police visiting the spot assured the affected people of relief and rehabilitation.
