DESCO drive: 1 slum dweller killed in triangular clash

A man was killed and several others injured in a triangular clash among the slum dwellers, police personnel and some officials of the Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO) in city’s Mirpur area on Saturday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Abdul Khaleque (38), an inhabitant of the slum.
The clash took place when the DESCO officials went to the Chalantika slum to detect illegal electricity connection and misuse of electricity.
Witnesses said, Khaleque died in a
jheel beside the Chalantika slum to avoid police arrest.
Bhojon Sarkar, Duty Officer of Fire Brigade said, a rescue team rescued the body from the jheel at about 03.00 pm.
However, the injured has been taken to several hospitals in the city.
Following the incident, police detained number of slum dwellers from the spot.
Azizul Haque Sub-Inspector of the Rupnagar Police Station said that police constable Abdul Latif was injured in the clash and admitted to a local hospital.
Slum dwellers attacked the police and DESCO officials when they went to Chalantika slum at Mirpur Section-6 at around 10:30am to cut off the slum’s unauthorised power connections, he said.
