World Bank’s Country Director for Bangladesh Marcy Miyang Tembon on Sunday said that Bangladesh could construct 2,500 kilometers of regional roads if one percent of wastage is reduced in the government’s procurement.
“If the government reduces one percent of the waste in its purchases, it is possible to build 2,500 km regional roads with that money or build four thousand primary schools,” said Marcy Tembon at a workshop on electronic government procurement (e-GP).
Speaking on the occasion, Planning Minister MA Mannan said the government has initiated reforms in every field and reforms also brought in government procurement system.
The government has taken mega development projects over the last several years involving huge expenditure. The government procurement rose to US$ 24 billion per year to implement these projects, according to World Bank.
A large part of this money is being wasted in many ways. If it is reduced, the country will see major changes in its infrastructure development, speakers said at the workshop.
They said introduction of e-GP helped the country to save US$ 600 million in the last six years.
