Chandpur municipality elections: 1 killed, 7 hurt in clashes

One person was killed and seven others injured in separate clashes during Chandpur municipality elections on Saturday.
There were several clashes at different places in the municipality area between 11:00am and 12:30pm, leaving one Yasin, 18, of Koralia area of the city, dead.
BNP Mayoral Candidate Akhter Hossain Majhi boycotted the polls, alleging
attacks and irregularities in the elections.
Hospital sources and witnesses alleged that a group of supporters of Awami League councillor candidate clashed outside the Gani Model High School polling station in Koralia area of the city at noon.
Yasin was seriously injured in the incident, while another youth, Saeed, was stabbed. Yasin was rushed to Chandpur Sadar Hospital and was immediately referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. He died on the way there, they said.
BNP candidate Akhter Hossain Majhi claimed four party activists were injured in an attack by Awami League activists outside the same polling centre around 11:00am.
Besides, three others were also injured in separate clashes.
In a press conference at around 2:00pm, the BNP candidate boycotted the election, alleging assault, fraud and irregularities in the election.
Voting at the Chandpur municipality election began at 9:00am at 52 centres. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) was used in 15 wards of the municipality polls that continued till 5:00 pm.
There were three candidates for the post of mayor in the election. Fifty candidates contested for 15 general councillor posts in 15 wards, while 14 candidates for five reserved women councillor posts.
