Staff Reporter :A strong earthquake jolted most parts of Bangladesh, including capital Dhaka, on Wednesday evening, killing one and injuring over 100 others.The tremor was felt in the country after an earthquake measuring 6.9 Richter scale struck in Myanmar, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) But the Germany’s Research Centre for Geosciences says the magnitude was 7.1.The earthquake hit Dhaka at 7.55pm, shaking buildings in the capital, witnesses and the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.According to US Geological Survey, the epicentre was 74 kilometres southeast of Mawlaik in Myanmar and its focal depth was 135km.Telephone networks have reportedly been disrupted in most parts of the city and people ran out of their houses and apartments when the tremor stuck.Several students of a madrasa in Moghbazar’s Modhubagh area have been injured when they raced down the stairs of the six-storey building, said Md Noman, a teacher of Madrasa-Tul Yosan.At least four among the 15 brought to Dhaka Community Hospital in the area were in critical condition, doctors said.Abdullah Alvee, who was at his Dhanmondi resident at the time of the quake, said, the seven-storied building shook strongly twice, for at least a minute. “Being panicked, I and many residents of the building ran out of the building to street for a safe shelter,” he added.A speedy bus struck a truck at Saturia, Manikganj during the earthquake, leaving 50 passengers injured. Of them, the condition of two women and a man was stated to be critical. Meanwhile, at least 10 multi-storied buildings reportedly tilted after the tremor stuck in the port cities of Chittagong and Khulna, according to our correspondents.Our Chittagong Correspondent said, a 4-storey building tilted on a 6-storey building at Amtoly in the port city.The tremor was also felt in the northeast India.According to National Centre of Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 7:25 PM at the depth of 134 km. There were no immediate reports of damage to property and life.The tremors were felt in Assam’s Kaziranga area, where the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge are visiting during their royal tour of India.
