A man died and five fell seriously sick after taking rectified spirit in Pouro area of Monirampur upazila on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Mona Datta, 28, son of Monilal Datta, resident of Hakoba village of the upazila and a betel leaf trader.
The vicitim’s family sources said Mona along with five others drank spirit and fell sick around 11pm.
Later, Mona was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Gautam Chakraborty, Pouro councilor, said Sanjit Kundu, Abdul Aziz and three others are taking treatment in secret to avoid any police hassle.
Local people alleged that Sanjit had long been involved in selling rectified spirit in the area.
