Sylhet Bureau :
With the completion of Boro paddy harvest weeks ago, the DAE has estimated the rice production at 18,68,201 tonnes in Sylhet division this year.
An official at the DAE’s Sylhet divisional office said of the total, rice production in Sylhet district has been estimated at 298,393 tonnes while it was 204,400 tonnes in Moulvibazar and 496, 209 tonnes in Habiganj.
However, the highest 869,199 tonnes was produced in the district of Sunamganj, which is considered the highest Boro growing area.
But, the production was low in some areas where the farmers cultivated BRRI-28, 29 and others, a little late than the prescribed time, said locals and officials.
On the other hand, at least a thousand hectares of land were damaged for rains, rolling waters, pests and other reasons.
But even then the total production was good, officials admitted. On average 4.72 tonnes rice had been produced from one hectare of hybrid variety while 3.78 tonnes of rice from high yielding varieties and 1.95 tonnes from the local verities, informed the Deputy Director at the said office Mazumder Md. Ilias. It may be stated here that Boro paddy was cultivated on a total of 478,869 hectares of land in the division this year.
A number of farmers said they had cultivated BRRI-28, BRRI-29 etc, mostly for early harvest to avoid possible rains. But the plants were affected by Blast disease and then by the hailstorms. All these affected the yield badly, they added.
Meanwhile, officials of citizens’ forum ‘Haor Banchao, Sunamganj Banchao’ said the government should see the matter properly as the farmers had cultivated the early varieties like BRRI-28, BRRI-29 and BRRI-58, as per suggestion of DAE officials. The poor and marginal farmers had suffered much due to the poor yield of those, the officials added.
