Customs Intelligence officials arrested a young man in possession of 14 gold bars and 77 pieces of gold chain weighing 1.5 kilograms at Shah Amanat International Airport in the port city on Monday morning.
The arrestee was identified as Mohammad Rashid,38, a resident of Rangunia upazila of the district.
Assistant Commissioner (Customs Intelligence) Shushanta Pal of the airport said Rashid arrived here from Dubai by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, ‘BG-048’, at about 6:45 am.
Tipped off, customs officials challenged Rashid while crossing the green channel.
Later, they recovered 14 gold bars and 77 pieces of gold chain weighing 1.5 kgs after searching his body. The market value of the recovered gold will be Tk80 lakh, said Shushanta Pal.
