BNP will observe the 37th death anniversary of its founder and former President Ziaur Rahman across the country today with due respect.
BNP and different socio-political organisations have taken up elaborate programmes, including discussion meetings, milad mahfil, photo exhibition and free medical camps, wearing black badges, publishing posters and supplements in newspapers and distributing food and clothes among the destitute, to mark the day.
On May 30, 1981, Zia was assassinated by a cabal of army officers at Chittagong Circuit House. He founded BNP in 1978. Born on January 19, 1936 at Bagbari in Bogra, Zia was a sector commander during the Liberation War and awarded with Bir Uttam, the highest gallantry award for a living officer for his wartime services. BNP and its associate organisations have chalked out a 10-day programme to observe the day. The observance of the death anniversary began on May 25 and will end on June 5. As part of the programmes, BNP arranged a discussion on Tuesday at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh. The party flag will be hoisted at half-mast, while black flags to be hoisted at the party’s Nayapaltan central office and all other party offices across the country at 6am today. Leaders and activists of the party, led by its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, will place wreaths at Zia’s grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the morning. Jatiyatabadi Ulema Dal will hold a milad and doa mahfil on the premises of Zia’s grave.
Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) will arrange a free medical camp at BNP’s Nayapaltan office while Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal will arrange a photo exhibition at the Jatiya Press Club the same day. BNP leaders will distribute iftar items and clothes among the destitute at different parts of the city on the day arranged by Dhaka North and South units of BNP. All district, city and thana units of the party will also observe the day in a similar way.
