The candidates, who are interested to be teachers and officials of public universities, have to sit for written examination for the first time in the history of the country’s public universities.
Not only that, the administration will have to wait for positive verification report from police and intelligence agencies before issuing appointments.
Presently, the teachers and the officials are appointed on the basis of their results.
The Education Ministry issued the directive upon the instruction received from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the official of the ministry said.
The ministry sent a letter to the University Grants Commission (UGC) to implement the decision of the ministry.
The letter said that the PMO observed that there were many irregularities in appointment of teachers and officials.
“The public universities do not receive police or intelligence verification before appointing teachers and officials. As a result, the anti-government men and women get chance to be teachers and officials. So it should be mandatory in future,” the letter said.
It also said, “The candidates can be teachers and officials facing viva voce only. The existing system of the appointment helps creating anomaly and the talent candidates face injustice. So, the irregularities will be quashed if the authorities take written examination.”
Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique told The New Nation on Wednesday that he did not get any direction from ministry or the UGC.
“No direction has been received by the Dhaka University. After receiving any letter the university will take its decision,” he said. The VC also said that the ministry did not take any recommendation from the university.
“It was good if the ministry discussed with the varsity authorities. But unfortunately the ministry ignored it,” Arefin Siddique said.
A VC of a public university wishing anonymity told this correspondent that the ministry took the decision whimsically. It would have been better if the ministry sat with the VCs of the public universities.
Terming the decision of the ministry ‘unwise’ some top bosses of the public universities said that the ministry tried to impose its decision. But the varsities are not bound to follow his direction, as the institutions are autonomous.
