Withdrawal of duty on bidi industry demanded

Demanding withdrawal of all sorts of duty on bidi industry and enhancing remuneration of the bidi workers, the Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation once again started holding ‘Road Show’ in different parts of the country from Monday.
Addressing a rally, organized on the occasion, at Shariatppur on Monday, the Bidi Workers Federation leaders also demanded to form a commission to save the country’s Bidi industry.
The rally took place after holding a human chain and road show at Shariatpur Municipality premises .
General Secretary of the Federation, M K Bangali, Joint General Secretary, Abdur Rahman, Organising Secretary, Herik Hossain, Members Shamim Islam, Abul Hasnat addressed the rally among others.
The leaders and members of Bidi Sramik Federation, Shariatpur, organized and participated in the human chain and road show, demanding to stop conspiracy on shutting down the bidi industry.
Workers from different parts of Shariatpur including Kotapara more, joined the road show with motorbike rallies.
Addressing the rally, M K Bangalee said the bureaucrats of the government takes one-sided decisions over the country’s Bidi industry and a vested quarter have engaged themselves in closing down the bidi industry.
“Our demand to the government is to form a commission on Bidi industry where the representatives from the owners, workers bodies and concerned authority of the government will be comprised. And the decision on Bidi industry will be taken through consultation of the stakeholders”, Bangalee said.
He urged the prime minister to form the commission so that the bidi workers can be saved and they never have come on to the roads to stage demonstrations.
Joint General Secretary, Abdur Rahman said that it’s true that smoking is injurious for health, well, then if Cigarette is allowed then why not Bidi?
He strongly said if smoking is allowed in the country then side by side cigarette there will must be Bidi.
“Conspiracy to stop bidi industry is on for quite a long period of time, once which was for shutting down our Jute industry, but closing down the bidi industry will never be happened until we are alive, if needed we will stage demonstration by blocking all the roads of the country’s bidi industry dominating regions and will continue our agitation until our demands are not met”, Rahman added.
The Federation started holding road show earlier in November this year.
