Sale of warm clothes have picked up at roadside makeshift shops and different hawker markets in Rangpur as the mercury has plummeted in the region intensifying the wintry chill over the last few days.
The people, particularly from low and fixed income groups, are crowding the makeshift shops to buy warm clothes such as sweaters, jackets, cardigans, woolen caps and mufflers to fortify themselves against the biting cold.
“I have sold a number of second-hand warm clothes. The used clothes are in high demand, compared with new ones, which the poor cannot afford to buy,” said Akbar Hossain, who runs a roadside shop near the railway station inthedistricttown.
He said most of his customers are from the low and fixed income groups, including day labourers, rickshawpullers and employees of different governmentandprivateorganisation.
Rahim Miah, a farm labourer, lives in a makeshift house on the embankment of the Teesta river in Gongachhara upazilla. He said, “We have been facing extremely bitter cold for the last few days. So, I came to the town to buy some second-hand warm clothes for my family members.”
Noor Mohammad, who is selling second-hand warm clothes like jeans jackets, woolen blazers and sweaters at the market, claimed many well-off people were also buying winter clothes from the market.
“Particularly youths are frequenting the market to buy different items as their quality and designs are better than new ones,” he said.
Shafiqul Alam, owner of a shop at Salek Hawkers’ Market of the town, said buyers, mostly low-income people, flocked to his shop over the last few days.
Farid Ali, a rickshawpuller said, he has bought three woolen sweaters for his children from a footpath shop near the railway station.
The quality of second-hand clothes he bought is very good, he said, adding “They still look fresh and they are also comfortable to wear.”
Many shopkeepers at different hawker markets in the town claimed that the demand for different varieties of shawls and woolen blankets are also high this year. The prices of the warm clothes are higher this year than those of last year.
