Watermelon cultivation is becoming popular among the farmers in Sylhet region as they have been reaping profit satisfactorily for the last few years.
RDRS Officer said the NGOs are extending assistance to more than 2,500 poor families in the districts.
The families, who cultivated Watermelon, would harvest the crop from May in Fenchugonj, Biswonath, Goinghat and Jointapur upazilas of Sylhet, he said.
These families are now leading a better life through Watermelon cultivation with the assistances from different NGOs.
Farmer Akbor Ali of Dakshin Surma upazila said he sowed 250 Watermelon plants on his char lands this year. He sold 1,650 Watermelons last year at Tk5 lakh and profited Tk60,000.
Kuddus Mian of Jointapur said he had cultivated Watermelon on his cropland and has benefited greatly from sale of the vegetable.
Horticulture Specialist of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said that cultivation of Watermelon in the sandy-barren char lands has become popular in recent years through GO-NGO collaboration.
Deputy Director of the DAE said Watermelon cultivation has become popular in the areas and farmers here are becoming financially solvent.
