Warrants arrest against Khaleda

Two courts of Dhaka yesterday issued warrant of arrest against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in two cases as she did not appear before the courts in the cases.

 Magistrate Nur Nabi of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka issued warrant against the BNP Chairperson as she failed to appear before the court in the case filed for ‘undermining country’s map and flag’.
On completion of recording the self-defence statements, the judge of Special Judge Court-5, set up a the makeshift court Bakshi Bazar area gave the order. Later, the court fixed October 19 for hearing on arguments in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on July 3, 2008 with Ramna Model Police Station accusing Khaleda Zia, her son and BNP’s Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and four others for misappropriating more than Tk 2.1 crore that came as grants for orphans from a foreign bank.
Of the six accused, Khaleda Zia, former BNP lawmaker Salimul Haq Kamal and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed have been on bail while others including Tarique are on the run. Khaleda Zia has been skipping the hearing of the case since July 15 while Tarique Rahman has been shown fugitive in the case. Besides, Salimul Haq Kamal and Sharfuddin Ahmed who were on ad-interim bail were sent to the jail cancelling their bail.
The court also directed the Officer-in-Charge of Gulshan Police Station to submit a report by November 12 after execution of the arrest order.
Earlier, the CMM Court’s Magistrate issued the arrest warrant against Khaleda Zia. AB Siddiue, President of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, a pro-Awami League organisation, submitted a petition seeking an arrest warrant for Khaledea Zia on September 17, and the court warned Khaleda Zia of arrest warrant if she failed to appear before the court on October 12.
Complainant Siddique on November 3, last year filed the case with the court, accusing Khaleda Zia and her late husband former President Ziaur Rahman of undermining the map and national flag of the country.
