Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said on Monday that voters’ turn out was 43.32 per cent at first phase of 5th Upazila Parishad election.
The Secretary passed the remarks in the Election Commission office at Agargaon in the capital.
He said, in the first phase 43.32 percent people franchised their voting right. Action will be taken after investigation against the persons responsible for postponement of election.
When asked about the lapses of the Election officials, Helal Uddin said, it was the matter of ethics and morality. Sometimes few officials were biased and worked for identified candidates. When it came to the EC’s notice, action was taken.
The election in the postponed centres will be held with 5th phase or fresh scheduled will be declared.
The first phase of election was held in 78 Upazila Parishads of 12 districts on Sunday with allegation of vote stamping and snatching ballot papers.
It is first time that the Upazila Parished elections are held with political party symbol. During campaign, the voters did not show minimum
interest to the election. It has been said that people lost their interest as few popular political parties did not take part in the polls race.
The size of the electorate in the 78 Upazilas is 1,42,48,850 and 5,847 polling stations in 12 districts, which are Panchagarh, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Netrakona, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Sirajganj, Joypurhat, Natore and Rajshahi.
About 207 chairman candidates, 386 vice-chairman candidates and 249 woman vice-chairman candidates are contesting in the polls.
