A total of 3447 people accused in criminal cases secured bail on Sunday from virtual courts across the country, including Dhaka, on the fourth working day of virtual hearings.
The courts granted them bail after holding hearings on the petitions through video conference, said a press release sent by Md Saifur Rahman, Special Officer of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court.
Earlier the online courts across the country granted bail to 2978 people on May 12, 13 and 14.
Saifur Rahman said that 4664 bail applications were heard by the courts after those had been filed through emails on Sunday in the district and sessions judges’ courts across the country and 3447 persons got bail.
Countrywide Online courts started proceedings on a limited scale on May 11, but the court started to grant bail on May 12.
The chief justice on Sunday for the first time in the country empowered the Appellate Division chamber judge and three High Court judges to hear the most urgent matters relating to writ petitions, bail appellations and civil and company cases during the long public holiday due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Similarly, the district and metropolitan sessions judges, special judges, speedy trial tribunals and women and children repression prevention tribunals, juvenile courts, the chief metropolitan magistrates and chief judicial magistrates were empowered to hear only bail applications during the public holidays.
