Police arrested a newly elected union parishad chairman on Friday in connection with the attack on two temples in Nargun union of the upazila.
The arrestee was identified as Poigam Ali, chairman of the Nargun union parishad. Mashiur Rahman, officer in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said miscreants swooped on Pokati Durga Temple and nearby Kali Temple in the early hours of Friday. They dragged a Kali idol and a Durga idol from the temples and set those on fire.
Police called the UP chairman to the police station in the afternoon and arrested him after a case was filed in this connection. Meanwhile, superintendent of Thakurgaon Police Farhat Ahmed visited the spot.
