UP Chairman held for embezzlement of relief rice in Itna

Police detained Dhonpur Union Chairman and Itna upazila ruling Awami League leader Haranath Das (40) over allegation of selling 5050 kgs of rice allocated for the relief of flood victims at Itna Upazila in Kishoreganj.
A case was filed against UP Chairman Haranath Das over relief embezzlement and he has also been fined Tk 50,000 for misappropriation and beating up a food officer.
Md. Siddique Rahman, Deputy Director , Disaster Management and Relief said that Haranth Das, Dhonpur UP Chairman took 5 tonnes of rice allocated for relief from a government food warehouse claiming he would distribute the rice among the flood victims on May, 01.
However, he did not do so and sold the rice in the black market.
Itna UNO Md. Moshiur Rahman said that based on allegations made by locals, UNO conducted an investigation and called Chairman Haranath Das at UP office for an interrogation regarding the matter on Sunday evening. After the interrogation the UNO found the chairman guilty.
 Chairman Haranath confessed that 110 bags of relief rice were recovered from a house located near Itna Bara Bazar.
Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Hasanuzzaman field a case with Itna Police Station against Chairman Haranath accusing him of relief embezzlement on Sunday.
Deputy Commissioner Md. Azimuddin Biswas said The New Nation, we are working day and night to support the haor affected people.
No irregularities will be tolerated regarding the relief allocated for the flood victims. We are monitoring everything. We are not going to forgive anybody who is responsible for such irregularities.
Chairman Haranath Das was placed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Count on Monday noon and granted bail.
