Unprecedented brutality in Bogra: Arrests are made but crimes go unabated

WHAT happened in Bogra the day before yesterday exceeds even the brutality of medieval times. The convenor of the Bogra Town Sramik League is reported to have abducted a female student from her home, raped her and then asked his party cadres and a woman Councillor to make sure everything was hushed up. Moreover, the rapist and his accomplices picked up the student and her mother, tortured them for four hours and then shaved their heads. We severely condemn this extreme act of collective cruelty. The rapist, arrested by the police, is reported to have confessed but that does not mean others criminals will stop their crimes.

Barely two weeks ago – a recently married 22 year-old bride was reported to have been gang-raped by a group of Chhatra League leaders at Barisal’s Banaripara Upazila.

The police are very busy fighting terrorism but the crimes are being committed against men, women and children as if there is no police, there is no authority to stop the criminals and punish them.

There is something seriously wrong in our politics if it is to be called politics. The leaders believe, they need dangerous men in the party for doing politics of violence. They do not care about politics of people’s vote. For creating panic violent criminals are needed.

The party followers know they do not have to fear the police. The police are theirs and whatever happens their arrest is a different question to find an answer. Whether the party criminals are punished to create fear in their minds remains a puzzle. Party members including local MPs are responsible in creating terror locally claiming themselves to be above law.

A total of 7889 women became victims of violation last year while unreported violence against women is much higher. The police are all powerful yet life of the ordinary people are most unsafe.
