British High Commissioner expresses concern and sadness to learn of continuing loss of life and injury by ongoing violence in Bangladesh.
British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert W Gibson returned to Bangladesh on Thursday from a short break in the UK. He expressed his sadness and regret to learn of the continuing loss of life and injury, as well as the detrimental effect on children’s education and the economy caused by the ongoing violence across the country.
He called on all parties to refrain from inciting or committing acts of violence and intimidation.
The High Commissioner said: “I am deeply saddened that within the last month, over 50 people have been killed and many hundreds more horribly injured in acts of violence across Bangladesh. Many children have had their education badly affected: the economic cost grows daily. This is having a detrimental effect on the development and stability of the country. “I hope that all sides will refrain from inciting or committing future acts of violence and intimidation. The tragic death of so many in Comilla on Tuesday is the latest example of how innocent people are paying the ultimate price for the ongoing situation. I extend my condolences to the families of all those who have been affected.
The UK continues to call on both the Government and all parties to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law, and to come together to break this cycle of violence and disruption.”
