S M Mizanur Rahman :A mild earthquake jolted capital Dhaka and different other parts of the country again on Sunday afternoon a day after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake in Nepal that killed over 2,300 people.The epicentre of the earthquake was 17 kilometre south of Kodar region in Nepal – 612 kilometre from Bangladesh, said an official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). Besides Dhaka, the tremor also shook different parts of the country, the official acknowledged. According to US Geological Survey (USGS), the jolt was felt at 1:12pm, shortly after a 6.7 magnitude tremor hit Nepal on Sunday. A man identified as Haider Ali alias Nantu, 72, of Betmari-Ghughurakandi union of Sherpur sadar upazila died of cardiac arrest on Sunday as he got panicked while coming out of his house when the earthquake jolted the country.As panic spread in city and different other places of the country, people hurriedly rushed out of their houses and workplaces just after the tremor shook in the afternoon. The tremor also caused cracks in many buildings and some of them tilted in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Barisal, Sripur and different other districts.The National Sports Council (NSC) tower in city’s Paltan crossing and an under construction building at Motijheel tilted on Sunday afternoon. Besides, another ten-storey garment factory at Tongi in Gazipur tilted creating panic among the workers. The Registrar Building of Rajshahi University also developed crack on Sunday’s earthquake. Talking to The New Nation Md Mominul Islam, Duty Officer of Seismic Observatory and Research Centre of Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the country was shaken at 1.12pm on Sunday as the earthquake with a magnitude 6.7 hit Nepal.”Frightened people came out into the streets out of panic soon after the fresh tremor. Workers of many garment factories in Savar, Naryanganj, Gazipur and capital Dhaka were injured while trying to leave their workplaces during the earthquake. The injured workers have been admitted to local clinics and hospitals.Following the incident, most of the garment factories in Savar and Gazipur were declared closed for the day.
