Rain is yet to come to bring respite from weeklong scorching heat cooling the ongoing rising temperature to normal level.
The minimum temperature was higher than usual in the capital and its outskirts on Tuesday while the humidity fluctuated to keep steady the sultry weather like the previous days.
The mercury in different parts of the country, including Rangamati, Chandpur, Maijdi Court, Rajshahi and Khulna, also continued to rise, adversely affecting the residents despite occasional rains.
The highest temperature was recorded 38.7 degree Celsius on Tuesday in Chuadanga and the lowest 24.3 degrees Celsius in Syedpur. The maximum temperature in the
capital city was 35.0 degrees Celsius while the lowest recorded at 28.6 degree Celsius, according to the MET Office.
Officials said, the mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Khulna division and regions of Rajshahi and Pabna and it may continue. Day and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged.
Sanaul Hoque, Senior Meteorologist, Department of Metrology, told The New Nation yesterday night, “The country has been witnessing a mild to moderate heat wave for the last few days and the prevailing heat wave would continue for some more days. As per our forecast, the ongoing heat wave will continue until the monsoon arrives with full force. ” “Thus the air remains hot and dry during the day time with increase in the temperature at night as well. Besides, the lack of moisture in the air prevented the ground from cooling even at night,” he detailed.
Meanwhile, the prevailing hot spell has been triggered by the lack of humidity in the air which has been aggravated by the prolonged electricity load shedding in some parts of the city, forcing many of the city dwellers to remain indoors.
In fact, the sufferings of school going children knew no bound due to sultry weather. Besides, office goers and the commuters have been facing serious hardships on way to and from their respective workplaces due to the persisting heat.
The day-labourers and rickshaw pullers are the worst sufferers as they have to do their chores in such humid weather for their livelihood. Many city dwellers were also seen thronging at roadside fruit shops and were seen quenching their thirst by drinking water from the street vendors.
Medical officials said hundreds of children have already been admitted in different hospitals and clinics with different seasonal diseases including diarrhoea and dehydration.
Particularly, the parents of children, age limit 2-10 years, were gathering in Shishu Hospitals in the city for emergency medical advice.
Physicians have urged the people to take precautions against the hot spell. “People must avoid sunlight during the midday time and take sufficient water and oral saline to get rid of dehydration,” a medicine specialist at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dr Robiul Islam, advised.
