Police have identified another slain militant as Rayhan Kabir, who was killed along with eight others in the Tuesday’s special drive of joint forces in the city’s Kalyanpur. He was the trainer of “Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery attackers, police also claimed.
With revealing of Rayhan’s identity, whereabouts of eight militants out of nine have been uncovered by police going through the database and verifying the fingerprints preserved in Election Commission. All the eight militants went missing from their houses ranging from six months to two years. This kind of hiding is popularly known as ‘Hijrat’ among the radicals. Of the eight slain militants, three were students of North South University, three were from madrassa background, one was student of Noakhali Government College and another was less-educated.
“Rayhan hailed from Pashua Tangailpara village under Etakumari Union of Pirgachha upazila in Rangpur district. He trained the militants who were involved in killing 20 people, including 17 foreigners, at Gulshan on July 1. After 25 days, the investigators got information about Kalyanpur hideout and conducted the operation,” Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transitional Crimes Unit, Monirul Islam, said.
He said Rayhan’s organizational name was Tarek. He was the commander of Dhaka area of Jamiatul Mujahedin Bangladesh [JMB].
“Tarek was accused in the police murder case Baroipara area of Ashulia. Besides, we’ve got information about two other trainers who had set up training camps at a char of Sadullahpur in Gaibandha district. Of them, one was Tarek,” he noted.
“His father Shahjahan Kabir is a farmer. His parents left home hearing that their son was killed in joint forces drive. A local madrassa student Rayhan entangled himself with militancy after he fled away from his house three years ago. After that, he never returned. He took a job at a garment factory in Dhaka,” the CTTCU Chief said.
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Pirgachha Police Station Aminul Islam said: “Rayhan passed Dakhil from Dewan Saleh Ahmed Madrassa in 2013…..So far as we know, Rayhan came to see his ill mother at Rangpur Medical College Hospital in April. He was youngest among two brothers and two sisters.”
In another drive, the police detained slain militant Abdullah alias Motaleb’s father Sohrab Ali and elder brother Nurul Islam yesterday from their residence at Ballavpur under Nababganj upazila in Dinajpur.
Police, however, said that they were sent to Dhaka for DNA matching. Family members and local people told the police that they do not want body of Abdullah for burial.
Meanwhile, police on Wednesday night filed a case under Anti-Terrorism Act under clauses 6(2), 8, 9, 10, 12 and 13 against the slain militants with Mirpur Model Police Station.
“The case has been filed against nine dead, one detained and another absconding militant. Besides, several other unidentified persons were also accused in the case,” OC Mirpur Bhuiyan Mahbub Hossain said.
The relevant court on Thursday directed the concerned authority to submit report by 19 September. Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sazzadur Rahman passed the order.
On the other hand, police took Mamtaj Parveen, wife of Taj Manjil’s owner Atahar Uddin, on two-day remand for allowing tenants without verifying their information. Police said that Atahar Uddin has been absconding since joint forces operation.
