Traffickers must be brought to justice: TIB

UNB, Dhaka :
The Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Sunday demanded identifying the people who were involved in human trafficking and bringing them to justice.
Expressing grave concern over the plight of boatpeople, TIB in a statement said the lack of governance in migration sector, pervasive corruption and
weaknesses in law enforcement are the main reasons behind the human trafficking in the country.
The anti-graft body urged the government to form a national taskforce with the United Nations and the countries concerned to rescue the boatpeople floating in the seas.
TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said as per the media reports, now it is clear that a section of influential people, administrators and members of law enforcing agencies in collusion with each other forced the would-be migrants into a human collapse.
He said both local and international traffickers are involved in human trade and they were alluring innocent people with the hope that if they can go abroad anyhow, they will get work there and can change their life by earning more.
Iftekhar said the recent incidents of human trafficking again proved that failure to check corruption and establish good governance not only contributes to socioeconomic loss but also puts people’s life at risk and kills them.
