Sagar Biswas :Reckless driving by the son of a high police official claimed life of a jaywalker in the city’s Banani area on Thursday afternoon. The accused, Jafar Sadik, 23, son of Mozammel Hossain, Additional Deputy Inspector General of Criminal Investigation Department [CID] was arrested by police and produced before the court. He, however, managed to get bail from the court taking the advantage of loopholes of the existing law. When Jafar Sadik was recklessly driving a white-colour Toyota Allion car [Dhaka Metro Ga 21-6767] tagged with ‘Police’ sticker on the windshield, he hit the jaywalker and killed him on the spot, police said. The victim was identified as Mritunjoy Acharya, 50, son of Lal Mohan Acharya, hailed from Purbahati village, under Bancharampur upazila, in the district of Brahmanbaria. He was a resident of 442, Purba Kazipara under Kafrul Police Station and an official of Mamun Group, a buying house, at Chairman Bari, in the city.Bhuiyan Mahbub Hassan, Officer-in-Charge of Banani Police Station said the accident occurred when Mritunjoy was crossing the road under the foot over-bridge near Banani Road No- 11 at around 3:30pm. “The road was almost free at that time following the hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami in the city. He received fatal injuries when the car hit him in a violent speed,” the OC said. “The killer car dragged victim’s body a few yards away after hitting him. He died on the spot due to severe brain hemorrhage. The car smashed a sign post adjacent to the foot over bridge before it was finally stopped,” the OC added.Police caught the accused on charge of reckless driving and seized the car after victim’s younger brother filed a case with Banani Police Station the same day. Meanwhile, allegations have been raised against the concerned officials of Banani Police Station that they are trying to suppress the case in a bid to save Jafar Sadik being instructed by a powerful quarter in the police department. When contacted, Investigation Officer [IO] of the case Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam told The New Nation on Sunday that the damaged car was taken to the Banani Police Station while Jafar Sadik was produced before the court on Friday.”I don’t know how he [Jafar Sadik] managed bail from the court. However, we are conducting an investigation into the matter and the charge-sheet will be prepared within a few days,” the IO said. Is it possible to get bail after killing a man on the road? The IO said. “However, it’s not a killing in the eyes of law. It was an accident and it is bailable. The victim’s brother filed a case accusing Jafar Sadik on charge of an accident,” he said. He did not make any comment when asked whether the accused was drunk during the time of reckless driving. The IO, however, admitted that the accused [Jafar] did not go through a drug test after he was arrested by the police on charge of reckless driving.
