Department of Social Services (DSS) has disbursed allowances worth over Taka 979.05 crore among around 22.17 lakh beneficiaries under various social safety net programmes in all eight districts under Rajshahi division till June last.
DSS Divisional Director Sarwar Jahan told media that 5,84,456 beneficiaries received old-age allowance worth Taka Taka 29.22 crore, 2,55,543 widow and repressed women get Taka 12.78 crore and 2,19,591 insolvent people with disabilities get Taka 16.47 crore.
11,797 students with special needs and 478 transgender students were given allowance worth Taka 98.12 lakh in four categories. Another 611 transgender people get Taka 3.67 lakh.
A total of 5,026 disadvantaged people were given an allowance of Taka 25.13 lakh for their rehabilitation while their 2,245 children get Taka 13.19 lakh for education purposes.
Around 2,578 patients suffering from various chronic diseases like cancer, kidney, liver cirrhosis, stroke, paralized and heart received financial support worth around Tk 12.89 crore.
Besides, 4,77,599 people of disadvantaged and backward population out of poverty were given interest-free microcredit worth Taka 859.68 crore to improve their living and livelihood condition in the division.
Sarwar Jahan said the families of the extreme poor in villages received the microcredit between Tk 5,000 and Tk 30,000 under four microcredit programmes namely rural social services activities, rural maternity centre activities, rehabilitation of the people affected by burn injuries and disabled people and urban society development activities.
About 50 percent of people involved in these activities are women, he added.
The department has disbursed freedom fighters honorarium allowance worth around Taka 22.52 crore among 18,763 beneficiaries.
He said the present government has given due attention to implement social safety-net programmes through increasing its coverage in all possible areas.
The old age allowance programme has become an epoch-making achievement of the government as it has a positive impact on the beneficiaries along with their respective families and also on the society as a whole.
DSS Deputy Director Hasina Momtaz told BSS that the beneficiaries are getting their allowances timely through their own bank accounts.
She said the present government has taken many steps including old-age-allowances for the welfare of poor people to lower the poverty level in the country.
The present government has also attached priority to social safety net programmes for successful implementation of those. Monthly honorarium for the freedom fighters has been enhanced to Taka 12,000 from Taka 300.
