Muggers snatched Tk 31 lakh from traders hurling crude bomb and shooting at them in broad daylight on the Dilu Road at Moghbazar, Dhaka, on Tuesday morning. Five employees of a distributor company of the Akij Group were injured in the incident.
The victims have been identified as Harun-or-Rashid, General Manager of JR Corporation Ltd, Nur Mohammad, Accounts Officer, Altaf Hossain, Security Guard, Mintu Ali Manik, a Mechanic, and Jahir, a Store-Keeper of the company. Of them, Rashid sustained splinter injuries while Mohammad received bullet wounds during the incident, police said. The injured are undergoing treatment at Insaf Baraka Kidney and General Hospital are now out of danger, said Sirajuddin, Deputy Superintendent of the hospital.
Quoting the witnesses and victims, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna Division) Iqbal Hossain said that a gang of muggers, numbering 6 to 7, riding on motorcycles, intercepted 8-10 employees of the JR Corporation, on the Dilu Road, 100 yards, they from their office near the Moghbazar crossing. At that time they were going to deposit Tk 31 lakh in a local branch of the National Credit and Commerce (NCC) Bank Ltd at around 10:20am.
Altaf was carrying the money in a steel-box on his bicycle. Suddenly, three muggers blasted 10 to 15 handmade bombs. Rashid, Altaf, Manik and Jahir received splinter injuries during the explosion.
The snatchers also stabbed Altaf and took away the box of money. The muggers fired several bullets that left Mohammad injured near the spot. Ramna Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moshiur Rahman confirmed the incident and said that police recovered two live bombs from near the Dilu Road around at 11:00am.
Police are trying to recover the snatched money and arrest the suspected muggers of the incident, the OC said.
