The Anti Corruption Commission has moved to restart a case against former military dictator Hussein Muhammad Ershad after 25 years.
ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said a petition was filed with the High Court on Monday to bring the appeal filed over the case to the court’s cause list, or business agenda.
“The case will be in Tuesday’s cause list of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha’s bench. We will request a date for hearing,” Khan said. Jatiya Party Chairman Ershad is accused of over Tk 19 million financial irregularities in the case started with Cantonment Police Station on Jan 8, 1991.
A Special Judge’s Court sentenced Ershad to three years in jail on Feb 3, 1992 in the case.
The High Court stayed the execution of the verdict following Ershad’s appeal the same year.
The ACC was included as a party in the case in 2012.
Khan in 2014 told bdnews24.com that the case was placed before a court for hearing but the proceedings did not advance.
Ershad faced around three dozen cases after he was toppled in the 1990 street movement.
He was sentenced in three of the cases and served time in one.
In an affidavit Ershad submitted to the ACC before the Jan 5, 2014 election, he said he had eight cases against him at the time, and the other cases had been disposed or he had been relieved of charges.
The High Court stayed proceedings of four of the eight cases.
Proceedings of three cases, including one over Maj Gen Manzur murder case, are under way.
The High Court is hearing the other case over embezzlement of gifts Ershad had received as the president.
