Tipu murder case, 2 more placed on remand

A Dhaka court yesterday placed two more accused on a five-day remand each in the case filed over the murder of two people, including former Awami League General Secretary of Motijheel Awami League Jahidul Islam Tipu, in Dhaka’s Shahjahanpur on March 24.
The accused are Md Nasir Hossain Manik, 47, and Md Maruf Khan 28, who were arrested from Mugda and Shahjahanpur area in the capital on Wednesday.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashek Imam of Dhaka CMM Court passed the order after a Inspector of the Detective Branch of Police and also the Investigation Officer of the case, produced them in the court with a 10-day remand plea for each accused. In his report, the IO said, Masum Mohammad Akash on April 5 gave a confessional statement where he mentioned the names of Nasir and Maruf.
A meeting for killing Tipu was held two months ago at Rupali Club in Motijheel when the two accused were present, the IO said in his report seeking remand. So, they need to be put on remand to find out vital clues about the killing and to arrest others responsible for committing the offences, he added.
Defense for the two accused submitted separate petitions seeking bail and cancellation of the remand prayer, saying that their clients were implicated in the case as part of a conspiracy to harass them. The defense lawyer also said their clients were arrested on March 28 and since then, they were in police custody.
Hearing both the sides, the court turned down the defense pleas and placed the two accused on remand.
Five others-Omar Farooq, AL general secretary of Dhaka South City Corporation Ward-10 unit; Abu Saleh Sikder, also known as Shooter Sale; Nasir Uddin alias Killer Nasir; Morshedul Alam alias Kayla Palash; and Abul Hossain Mohammad Arfan Ullah Imam Khan alias Damal-were placed on a five-day remand each earlier.
