The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday sentenced three war criminals to death for committing crimes against humanity in Moulavibazar district during the War of Liberation in 1971.
The three convicts are Abdul Mannan, Abdul Aziz alias Habul, and Abdul Matin from Baralekha Upazila in Moulvibazar district.
The three member tribunal led by its Chairman Justice Md Shahinur Islam handed down the verdict.
At the time of the verdict, Habul and Mannan were present in the court while Matin is still hiding.
On April 12, the tribunal kept the verdict on list and on May 17, the tribunal set Thursday for the pronouncement of the judgment.
Lawyers of the convicted war criminals M Sarwar Hossain and Abdus Sattar Paloan said, “We will appeal to the higher court against the verdict.”
Expressing satisfaction with the verdict, prosecutors Mokhlesur Rahman Badal and Sabina Yasmin Munni said that all five charges against them were proven to the court by the testimonies of the witnesses and the documentary evidences.
On October 16, 2014, the investigation against the trio started and it ended on November 14, 2016.
The three were charged with five types of crimes against humanity such as murder, rape, genocide and torture in the Barlekha area of Moulvibazar during the War of Independence in 1971.
On February 29, 2016, the tribunal issued arrest warrant against the war criminals.
Barlekha police on March 1, 2022 arrested Abdul Aziz and Abdul Mannan, and produced them before the tribunal on March 2. The court ordered them send to the jail that day.
