In line with the previous years, a three-day Bonsai exhibition and competition began here Friday aims at making the bonsai culture popular among the people.
Rajshahi Bonsai Society (RBS) arranged the fair at the Nanking Darbar Hall in the city for the 16th consecutive time with support from Home Stone Limited.
Pro Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi University Prof Dr Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan opened the exhibition as the chief guest while Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu of Rajshahi University spoke as special guest with RBS President Syed Mahfuz-E Towheed in the chair.
RBS General Secretary Sarwar Morshed illustrated the various aspects of bonsai culture and its positive impact on society.
Terming the bonsai practice as an art of precision, Prof Sarwar Jahan said it has been playing a vital role in reducing social crimes. Highlighting the various other aspects of bonsai culture he said the country could earn a lot of foreign currency through exporting quality bonsai to the developed countries.
Some 57 bonsai-parishioners are attending the exhibition with 165 bonsai of 36 species. Many varieties of Bonsai are on display at the exhibition, with banyan, ‘pakur’, fig, tamarind, Bougainvillea, Epil Epil and even pine trees done in various formations like formal upright, slanting, broom and rock-style.
Some of the works are in a landscape format with small clay houses and bamboo bridges. Many tree lovers throng to the exhibition to view and buy the dwarfed trees.
Bonsai is a Japanese word that means planted in a container. The origin of the art can be traced back thousand years. Bonsai is the art of making miniature of life-size trees. The exhibition is opened for the visitors from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm.
