The power must not continue to mean impunity

NEWS reports said a Dhaka Court on Sunday sent reserved seat MP and Mahila Awami League General Secretary Pinu Khan’s son Bakhtiar Alam Rony to jail at the end of his four-day police remand in a case over the shooting of two men to death in the city on April 14 this year. The Magistrate put Rony to jail when police produced him before the court. What this case has highlighted is the reckless use of power and gun by the son of a ruling party MP, who believe as the ruling party men, they are above law in public life. The cause of the shooting was even flimsier. He was annoyed with traffic jam at city’s Eskaton Street at midnight of April 14 that angered him although the city dwellers are accustomed to living with it on their daily life. It is noticeable that the Awami League government has utterly failed to solve the traffic problem but they are killing people in the street blaming them for traffic jam. It is a shame. Report said Rony at his mid-thirty was returning home in a Prado Jeep after drinking at a bar at Bangla Motor with three other friends. Being stuck up in the traffic jam he took out his gun and randomly fired on people in the street. One rickshaw puller died instantly from his bullet and the driver of a CNG auto later died at hospital.
In fact the killers were able to decamp without letting people know of their identity. Police had to look for the offenders for two weeks before they were able to fix the identity of the jeep from the CCTV at the locality. They arrested the driver at first and then Rony on the basis of driver’s confession. Police came to know that the jeep belongs to Pinu Khan MP and Rony is her son. She has bought the jeep duty free as a ruling party lawmaker and her son is misusing a licensed pistol although he is without a profession. But police reportedly sheltered him at several hospitals before he was taken to remand. His lawyer has applied for hospitalization again from the jail.
A similar story was reported last year when the son of a powerful ruling party lawmaker from Jessore was arrested for killing his wife, who was a physician of Red Crescent Holy Family Hospital in the city. The husband was put on jail; but the case remained stuck up while attempt are at work to prove that it was a suicide case. In Rony’s shoot out case there is a growing apprehension that its investigation may be misused citing his alcoholic addiction at the time of occurrence.
What is more annoying to the people is that members of the ruling party establishments are now using the country as if it is their fiefdom and they are above law from a sense of impunity that police and courts would protect them. If a midnight traffic jam could prompt the man to open fire on people in the street, what he would do to face the mid-day city traffic. It is advisable that arrogance of power must be handled with care before it ruins one-self and the people around.
The shameful thing some persons spend money to join politics only to buy impunity from the government. Most of the big crimes are committed by persons with political connections. Crimes have become a joint venture with politicians.
