Erosion by the river Teesta has taken a devastating turn at Alombiditor union under Gangachara upazila in the district during past few days, as result Paikan Jummapara Government Primary School of the area is on the verge of extinction.
Badrul Hasan, Headmaster of the primary school said they are so much worried about the fate of the institution. He said the school building was about one km away from the river last year but presently it is only around 10 feet away from the river. If the erosion continues for few more days, the entire school building may disappear into the river very soon, he apprehended.
The locals are trying to prevent erosion by setting up bamboo poles and dumping boulders but despite these efforts erosion is continuing, he further said.
According to sources the school was established in 1965. Around 200 students and five teachers of the institution are passing days in acute uncertainty as it now is under the threat of extinction.
Expressing apprehension a number of students of the school said that their exam is going on but they are not sure whether they will be able to complete it or not.
Alombiditor Union Parishad Chairman Mokarrom hossain said if erosion continues the entire institution will go under water. They have informed the concerned authority of the matter, he further said.
Deputy Assistant Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), Rangpur ,Tabibur Rahman said They have taken the matter seriously and already started necessary works to save the school from erosion.
