Technology research : Prospects and possibilities

Dr. Forqan Uddin Ahmed :
Very recently a group of researchers from Shah-Jalal University, Sylhet have found out the ways and means to detect cancer in human body through non- linear optic methods. Their team leader was Yasmeen Haq of the said University. From the study and research, it is assessed that the blood change is read by the application of high-powered X-ray with the help of this device. With this experiment the intensity of blood changes due to cancer will be under clinical trial. It is hoped that, this cost economy experimental device will get a complete shape by the next year. This is the success of elementary research of Physics. But it is not less significant in the development of medicine.
This is undoubtedly commendable. Nowadays in health sector of Bangladesh cancer is one of the non-contagious diseases. As reports by WHO, the worldwide cancer patients are almost 14 millions every year. About 9 million people die from cancer. On average 33 millions people live with cancer. Death rate caused by cancer is higher than HIV-AIDS, Malaria and tuberculosis. By the report of two decades from WHO it is apprehended, by 75% increase the cancer affected people will be 22 millions from 14 millions by 2030 which will be great threat for the development of Bangladesh. Another report says that monetary loss of the middle-income countries will stand to 7 trillion US dollar. On the contrary, with the progress of science and ICT medical science is over privileged sector. As per Geneva declaration of 2003 the e-health program stands at number 7 positions. The umbrella of online medical service is contributing and achieving success. In many countries of the world research activities are continuing with the minimum cost. Those results are become significant for Bangladesh.
There are many doctors of Bangladesh who are working in research line of Medical Science and contributing a lot by which image of the country has been built up. In this context, we may mention late professor Dr. A.B.F.M. Karim who is well known throughout the world. By the patronage from him and his friends cancer specialist professor Dr. Richard Love of America, a group of computer scientist from Bangladesh innovated “admonton symptom assessment model scale”, a mobile phone apps which is world wide familial now. In 2006 professor Karim invited Richard Love and they both worked on breast cancer in Bangladesh and made a Bangladesh friendly guideline. An eminent cancer specialist like him worked in the southern districts like Khulna, Bagerhat, Jessor, Satkhira, Narail, Gopalganj. He has imparted training to the students of Khulna Medical College and inspired them to innovative research. Dr. Love inspired Dr. Iqbal about non-invasive blood experiment, which is meant an Hb test by mobile video. It is found by the experiment of Dr. Iqbal that this test is possible within 10 sec action of mobile video.
They have taken up another experiment by which blood pressure test is possible by photography of retina in mobile phone. There lies the only condition that its beneficiary will be the Bangladeshi people. The foreign physicians are engaged in medical research. But it is unfortunate that we do not keep their records in our accounts, even we do not maintain a list of them and above all we do not have a plan to use their specialization and expertise.
In Baltimore, there is one doctor Md. Rafiq who is a Heart specialist and who works on Cardiac electro physiology in Japan, UK, and USA and took the initiative to bring Bangladeshi doctor for training. Dr Rafiq often comes to Dhaka and providing training and medical treatment. In research work of medical science the main problem is the money. In our country we have less budget in research work. But our government is very serious and sincere in this regard. Our honorable Prime Minister is very particular and highly eulogized.
The only problem is that these research works are restricted to paper only. No follow-up and no application are found. In agriculture, especially in the line of jute and textile our scientist Maqsud-ul-Alam invented the genome sequence. In his line Dr. Mongseno with a group of scientists has innovated the genome sequence of Hilsa fish. This is indeed a pride for Bangladesh. Now what is important for us is that we are to ensure the patent of innovative research. Without patent it carriers no legal value even it will gain no recognition. Our patent is of weak standard and not at par the value of the world. For international recognition, rather we will have to work on joint venture with the foreigners with promise and commitment.
We are to be very careful otherwise our achievement may fall and outside people will take it as of their own product. Our honorable prime Minister is going to join the UN session in America. If she spares time and sits with our Bangladeshi researcher it will boost them up and will be helpful for us. Consequently our science and ICT research will be much more productive and meaningful for the welfare of human being. It will open up our prospect to serve humanity and help to build humanitarian Bangladesh.
