The overall flood situation in the country will improve during the next 72 hours. The Buriganga, the Turag and the Shitalakkhya (Narayanganj) rivers around Dhaka city showed falling trend, said Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) sources.
The Brahmaputra, the Jamuna and the Padma and the Surma rivers registered fall yesterday, but the Kushiyara is rising.
The water level in the Dhaleswari at Elasin and Jagir fell by 12 and 10 cm respectively, but still flowing 29 and 19 cm above the danger level. The Kaliganga is flowing five cm above the danger level at Taraghat, the Titas is flowing seven cm above the danger level at Brahmanbaria.
Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.
The FFWC office recorded rainfall of 209 mm at Teknaf, 94 mm at Satkhira, 93.5 at Noakhali, 57 mm at Cox’s Bazar, 55 at Barguna and 42 mm at Narayanganj.
About 3.2 million people in the country’s 16 districts have been affected by monsoon-induced floods that began on 22 July. Forty-two deaths have been recorded so far but officials confirmed 38, nearly 7,400 people have sought refuge in 69 flood shelters, some 2,50,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged. The affected populations are mainly in need of food, water, shelter and emergency medicine.
