It’s a unique gesture of students to come forward to cut the ripen paddy of farmer Abdul Malek Sikder at Kalihati here on Wednesday who attempted to blaze his field being frustrated with labourers crisis, high wages and low price of paddy.
Farmer Abdul Malek on Sunday put his paddy field on fire at Bankina village of Paikra Union being frustrated on labour crisis, high wages of labourers and low price of paddy.
The news sparked a sense of grief among people after coming in social media.
Yesterday a group of 15 students of different colleges of the Kalihati Upazila voluntarily came to the Malek’s field and cut the paddy and reached those to his home.
Students said labour cost for cutting paddy is much higher this year comparing to the price of paddy, causing immense miseries to farmers.
Students are from Government Karatia Sa’dat College, Moulana Mohammad ali College and Lion Nazrul Islam College.
“It’s our compassion to all farmers and a gesture to be partner of their pain,” said Al Amin, a student of Moulana Mohammad Ali College.
Rafi, a student of Lion Nazrul Islam College said they came to know the matter from social media and decided to stand beside the farmer.
Abdul Malek said being frustrated and annoyed he set fire in his paddy field on May 12 last. But other farmers doused the fire before much devastation.
Students said they are happy to have the opportunity to stand beside a farmer.
