50 schools, madrasahs submerged in Tala: Students attending classes on street

Ahsanul Amin George back from Tala, Satkhira :At least 50 educational institutions of Tala upazila of Satkhira district were submerged due to recent downpour. Students are attending their classes under open sky on the street.Due to heavy rainfall for the last couple of days, 30 primary schools, 16 madrasas and 4 colleges of the upazila were inundated.While visiting the spot on Thursday, this correspondent found that the playground and classrooms of Kharail Government Primary School at Bhabanipur area in Tala upazila of Satkhira district were inundated. Guardians also discouraged their kids to go school as they also were marooned due to inclement weather. Incessant rain and tidal surge disrupted their education.”As there are water and water around us, we can’t go to school crossing waist deep and knee deep water”, said Arpita Mollick of class four.”Our PSC examination is knocking at the door but we can not attend our class properly due to the situation”, said Shajol Mondal, a fifth grader of the school.Turjo, Shameem, Ria and Mumtahina of the fifth grader also echoed with Shajol.Tonmoy Mollick, a guardian told this correspondent that they have been inundated since one month last, people can not go one place to another, in this situation, how can we send our kids to school ?Sheikh Zakir Hossain, Headmaster of Kharail government primary school said, the school was submerged since one month last, they are taking classes on the street since the last 15 days .At least 100 students are attending their classes amid risk of accident, because natural disasters like storm and downpour can hit them at any moment, the Headmaster added.Md. Wahidul Islam, upazila primary education officer of Tala said, students are being taught in a upper place and no school was declared closed.Md. Atiar Rahman, upazila secondary education officer said, educational institutions were inundated. Teaching is being hampered as water submerged the classrooms of some schools and colleges.Md. Farid Hossain, upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Tala upazila said, water has been removing gradually.Sanot Kumer Ghosh, upazila parishad’s chairman said, water logging was created in the locality due to non availability of drainage system. As such, teaching at 50 educational institutions are being hampered a lot, he added.
